The phrase Deus Ex Cinema is a play on the Latin phrase Deus Ex Machina, which literally means "God from the machine". It is a plot device whereby a seemingly unsolvable problem is suddenly and abruptly solved with the contrived and unexpected intervention of some new event, character, ability, or object.
You know when suddenly at the end of the book, movie, play, whatever, something miraculous happens and the problem is solved regardless of the rest of the story? That.
So Deus Ex Cinema (DEC) is more or less "God from the movie". The point of this is to show how, whether intentional or not, the story of Jesus Christ and the Bible show up all of the time in movies. The same could be said for books, but that's not what this site is about.
Without a doubt there will be movies posted here that have a fair amount of decidedly ungodly things in them. I'm not endorsing things that are stated as sin in the Bible, I'm just trying to show that, despite how often Hollywood tries to bombard us with unnecessary sex and violence, there are certain things that ring true in all of us. I'm talking about love, self-sacrifice, discipleship, mentoring, helping the needy, good vs evil. Those things come out in movies, even when the authors don't realize that's where they come from.
Feel free to suggest movies, but make sure the symbolism can be backed up with Biblical text.
